Frequently Asked Questions…

+ Is therapy right for me? When is it best to seek therapy?

People seek therapy for many different reasons and benefit from therapy in many different ways. Life gets messy sometimes, that is a guarantee, and there are many times in ones life where therapy can be a significant benefit. Our therapists at Metanoia firmly believe that if there is something that you are wrestling with, then THAT is reason enough to determine that therapy is right for you, and you don’t have to do it alone.

To be a bit more specific, it could be time to seek therapy if you are noticing that an issue is causing distress or even interfering with your daily life. Distress can show up as negative thoughts, feelings, behaviors, and even physically in our body. Here are just a few of the reasons that one might begin therapy:

  • Self Exploration and/or Self-Confidence: Who am I? Where do I go from here? Am I worthy of…?
  • Mood & Emotion difficulties: depression, anxiety
  • Trauma: past and/or recent traumatic experience
  • Relationship issues: parent/child, significant other, classmates/colleagues, difficulty starting or ending a relationship
  • Transitions between life stages: moving out of the house, personal/career growth, uncertainty or problems about career or academics, finding work/life balance
  • Grief and Loss: death of loved one, loss of a dream/expectation
  • Sexual or gender identity issues: exploring and understanding own identity or gender, not being accepted by important people in your life, experiencing bullying by others

Metanoia Therapy offers a phone consultation so you can determine if we are the right place for you before scheduling your first appointment. Please do not hesitate to contact us.

+ Why do you do a consultation before I schedule my first appointment?

It’s important to us that you are getting the best care and these consultations help me offer that. Consultations are free, last about 20 minutes, and are offered by phone or video. During this time, we’ll talk about what is impacting your life and what your goals are for therapy. This is also a time for you to ask us questions too. As mentioned, it is very important to us that you are getting the best care and are getting connected with the right therapist - consultations are helpful in determining what type of therapy is most appropriate and if we are the best fit for you. If we determine that we are not the best fit we can often offer recommendations for the therapist you are searching for.

+ What can I expect from therapy?

If you’ve never been to therapy before it can be a really intimidating to think about signing up for something when you don’t know what to expect. Sometimes we have the opportunity to ask a friend or family member about their experience, but often when we are in this space, we are in it alone, and asking someone about their experience, well… that is just never going to happen.

So here’s the deal… at your first appointment, we meet and you can share as much or as little as you feel comfortable with. Your therapist will have you complete some paperwork prior to coming to your first appointment and this will give them some idea about what is going on in your life and why you are considering therapy. Together, you’ll spend some time reviewing some logistics and discuss how therapy works with them. Your first appointment, plan to meet for about 90 minutes, as you and your therapist are getting to know each other and then when it’s all over, you’ll decide if you want to do it again.

In the following appointments, we will work on your therapy treatment plan to help you achieve your goals and then continue to work together focusing on these goals to build a life that brings you peace.

+ How long are sessions?

Your first appointment will be between 75 - 90 minutes in length. This extended time allows time for you and your therapist to build relationship and get to know each other. Each following therapy sessions are 55-60 minutes in length. Metanoia Therapy encourages weekly therapy sessions at the beginning in order to strenghen the relationship and focus on skills to provide relief.
